Welcome to the Kenwood poetry blog!

This blog showcases the original poetry of some of Kenwood Academy High School's Senior Class.

The diversity of the student body is mirrored in the diversity of the poetry; some poems are lighthearted and others are quite personal and serious. While the poems incorporate a variety of styles and themes, they are all inspired by the poetry that we've studied in class.

Playing For Everything

When I first
Started I
Was like this

So small I
Was easy
To diss

It wasn’t that
My sound was
Bad

It was that I
Didn’t have
What they had

Big hands
That make me seem
Stronger

Thought that I
Couldn’t stay
Much longer

Until I stayed there like I was in a boxing ring
But now its runny because I’m playing for
Everything.

A narrow fellow in the tank

A narrow fellow in the tank
Occasionally swims-
You don't want to meet him-did you not
His sharp teeth noticed.

The water waves as it speeds-
A smaller fish is seen ahead.
Then the giant with all its might,
A bite it takes to eat it right.

The small thing is gone
the narrow giant has his meal done-
The shape of its body is transformed
For it swallow the fish whole.

When near the tank
You stare at it,
It looks like nothing but a still plank.

This narrow fellow waits for the next day
To swim and play-
To catch its prey with no delay.

Looks can be deceitful

As she walks down the street,
She sees a man under a rusty sheet.
She looks down and notices his feet are bare
It doesn’t look as if life was very fair

He has a cup sitting beside him
He has family but the coins are not from them.
All the moisture has been taken from his skin
She presumes his life wasn’t as bad way back when

She ask questions like “how’s your health”
Or, “what happen to all your wealth”.
She wonders when he will ever respond
He opens his mouth and says I’m lyrond

She says do you want some change
He ask her do you think I’m in pain
She goes to open her pocket book
He puts a hundred beneath her foot

You Hit on me

You hit on me
like a boxing glove to my jaw

a big hit
a knockout.

Brian B./ 1st period.

He is....

He is hood but intelligent, he is as black as the southern soil
And his hands tough like a hustla, the hustla that he is
He is my black king and I shall obey his every order
He is full of pride and hides his weakness
I love his masculine beauty
He loves my beautiful soul
And he knows I will neva give up on him
I will give him my heart
One day…..
And together we will prosper.

West swag, Left Swag

Laid back like a maybach because im from the west
and yes west rhymes with best so that means the rest
settle for 2,3,4, ect. and theres none like me
but even though im not alone my west is one
compared to others swag breaks the scale
so much in fact we can only inhale west air
not the store but we are fresh wear and we stay clean
and make through it all and when i die and lean
when we pass they'll say we got west swag left swag

My Warden

Inspired The Panther

I hear the keys, I smell the stale air
How I wished to be free of my jail free to roam the lush green meadows
I could sense her presence coming near my warden
The one who keeps me caged like a lion the one who never lets me be myself
I conform to what my warden wants me to be
I say the right thing wear the right clothes
Anything to please my warden/
She never lets me out she fears I will stray away and become my own self if
I were to leave.
This is why I stay in my cage pacing back and forth always on the inside looking out
My only vistor is my warden she comes to my room leaves the door open and dares me to leave
She's knows i won't for to leave i would have to look at her face
And to do that is far worst then to stay in my cage
I can't bare to face the one who has alienated me from the world
I can't face to one who has made me into a robot of other people
I can't face the one who has stripped away all my individuality
I can't look into the eyes of the one who has made me a ashamed of being me
Who closets me inside a room to keep me from breaking free
I cannot look into the eyes of my warden because when i look into her eyes all i see is
ME!!!!!!!!

Revenge

Revenge in never a straight line.It’s a forest,and like a forest it’s easy

to lose your way,to get lost, and to forget where you came from.Though you

may be satisfied with the choice you make, later the consequences of that

choice will catch up with you.

Third Period

Every day running to class from the 3rd floor to the first
The teacher not proud she’s yelling to loud her lungs are about to burst.

The late bell rings, you know the routine
Don’t make a scene just go and get your tardy.

The teacher say’s, you get what you earn
So next time come prepared to learn.

So were now reading stranger.
A boy named Meursault is in Danger.

Were then assigned chapters to read.
No one does and the teacher is not pleased.

She then stresses the importance of the class.
Students ignore it an still play and laugh.

She say’s if you all keep this up your not going to win.
Remember Im the teacher, I have the final say so in the end.

The end of the year, is now approaching
And the teachers is now deciding who should get promoted.

Life For An African Americam Male

Life for an African American male is rough.
Life for an African American male is tough.

Life is like running up and down stairs because there’s no elevator.
Life is like walking a 1000miles because there’s no transportation.

Life is like being all alone because there’s no one there.
Life is like being left abandoned because no one cares

Life is like a war zone with no ending.
Life is harsh and deep like the deep blue sea.

Life is sometimes useless because we use it for all the wrong reasons.
Life is the beginning of some one’s ending.

What will you do about the life you live?
Will you be the change you wish to see in the world?

Will you make a change in somebody’s life?
Will you leave positive impacts on younger children?

Secrets

LIFE has dark secrets; and the hearts are few

That treasure not some sorrow from the world--

A sorrow silent, gloomy, and unknown,

Yet colouring the future from the past.

We see the eye subdued, the practised smile,

The word well weighed before it pass the lip,

And know not of the misery within:

Yet there it works incessantly, and fears

The time to come; for time is terrible,

Avenging, and betraying.

The Gods

The Gods

The gods are rinsing their just-boiled pasta in a colander, which is why it is humid and fitfully

raining down here in the steel sink of mortal life. Sometimes you can smell the truffle oil and

hear the ambrosia being knocked back, sometimes you catch a drift of laughter in that thunder

crack: Zeus knocking over his glass, spilling lightning into a tree. The tree shears away from

itself and falls on a car, killing a high school girl.

Or maybe it just crashes down on a few trash cans, and the next day gets cut up and hauled

away by the city. Either way, hilarity. The gods are infinitely perfect as is their divine mac and cheese.

Where does macaroni come from? Where does matter? Why does the cat act autistic when you

call her, then bat a moth around for an hour, watching intently as it drags its wings over the area

rug? The gods were here first, and they're bigger. They always were, and always will be living it

up in their father's mansion.

You only crawled from the drain a few millennia ago, after inventing legs for yourself so you

could stand, inventing fists in order to raise them and curse the heavens. Do the gods see us?

Will the waters be rising soon? The waters will be rising soon. Find someone or something to

cling to.

With Time

He would cry and cry until what he wanted was gotten.
Tears like rain drops falling from his face, but with time
they would fade away.
So determind he seemed, and with time he could fulfill his
dream. Asking and demanding all the time that when he
heard no he started to cry.
Sometimes he cryed so much he would fall asleep,
sometimes he would cry so much it made him weak, but with
time he realized.
He realized how older he's gotten and how independent he could be,
but all alone that little boy was me

Common Ground (continuation)

Other days,
when i look into the mirror I see
my uncles strong jaw and serious facial structure
reminds of the obstacles of which i cannot overcom
which currently does not exist
his facial structure determined and focused
to overcome
which completes and represents our common ground

Introduction To Poetry (continuation)

they beat and beat it
not realizing it wont crack
it wont break because they are not inside of it
just like the author likes it

no confession
they whooping does nothing
take off your shades and pretty clothing
for it helps you see and feel

now juimp into its water and swim
you might not want but open your eyes
swim and see until you reach the end
explore the surface
the heart of the poem
no matter your motivation
whether you'd give your right arm
to find its meaning
you follow the authors vision
and swim

BEAUTY

I have seen dawn and the sunset on your face, when the windy hills coming in your beauty like slow old tunes of the 1960’s.

I have seen the desire in the inspiration in the eyes of the beauty skin soft like warm April rain where I feel a heart break is pain.

I have heard the song of the sun and chant of the people in the city and seem the loveliest thing of god ever has showed to me but I can realize voice and hair, eyes and lips were all apart of “beauty”!?!

WHITE ROSE

looking at him for the first time,
made it as if i had know him all my life.
He had seemed to me a new born, laying in crib
embracing all of what this new world had to offer.

Yes, connecting his life into mine, we were
symese twins unwanted and unloved but yet so
far apartthat even if i came close to him my
heart would burn with hatred and envy.

Envy that I could feel my heart having for
him. Seperate from my own body,it had a
mind of its own. It's made me do bad things.
That's how I ended up in this shawshack
redemption piece of the rest of my beings.
Nevermind that though.

We were put in here for the same thing
but he was the one getting treated as
if he was a puppy surrounded by children
who only wanted to play with him.THESE
CHILDREN TOOK CARE OF HIM.

I'm the one with the relief, you ask why?
Beecause when these chidren get done
playing with him,he doesn't get a treat
for the deeds he is forced to do for them.
These deeds changed him into a that i am now
glad that he is.

Selfish and mean right? yeah it would seem
that way. I don't lift a finger for him.Not
even to help him wipe up the anger from his
face.Until this moment i found myself caught
in his shoes and we're really like twins because
these childrn mistake me for him and him for me.
And just like he reached out for me to help him.
I reached out for him to help me.

My Path

Open them, make them feel special.
Don’t get anything in them. Wait, I’m
Afraid that you’ll hurt me. Connect mine into
yours. Let me feel what you feel. Let them breathe
your putting too much in.

Have you ever done this before? It feels like
you’re a rookie. I can’t believe I let you do this.
I’m all wrong now. My body is toxic. You wronged me.
Why would you lead me to such terror.

No one loves me anymore. I feel dumb.
All this time I spent with you. You tricked
me. At first you seemed to be a textbook.
I gave in to your lies and scandle’s.

Is it too late to go to her. I don’t think so.
She won’t do me like you did. She cares for me.
She has no chose I’m hers. She’ll make my cranium
like hers again. I shouldn’t have believed in you.
I thought you were a professional. Well that’s what
I get for hiring and online tutor. But what do I do now.
